Application of calculus of variations to model power expenditure on velodromes

Leaning along the curves of a velodrome entails increases of both kinetic and potential energy, which require work, beyond the work against such factors as the air, rolling and drivetrain resistance. Herein, invoking the calculus of variations, we quantify the work expended to increase mechanical energies.
